About the event

Wyndham Social gladly presents Protanopia Blues, a solo exhibition by Spanish artist Diggity Douglas. An ongoing experiment and exploration of the subconscious influence on creativity, Diggity Douglas's latest series, "Protanopia Blues", showcases his imaginative use of visions and symbols while paying homage to his Spanish Surrealistic roots. This collection delves into intense subject matters such as substance abuse and the struggles of a painter with acute colour blindness. The deconstructed figures serve as a gateway into the artist's introspection, captivating viewers and inspiring their own self-reflection.

Diggity Douglas, born in Spain, has been influenced by the works of the Spanish Surrealist masters since his childhood. His creations primarily focus on portraiture, and he has been painting caricatures since his school days. His recent series of eating and drinking figures is inspired by his admiration for the Spanish Surrealist master, Pablo Picasso. The composition and colour palette of Picasso's 1938 artwork, Man with Straw Hat Eating Ice Cream, had a profound impact on Diggity Douglas when he was still an art student.

Inspired by the relationship between Salvador Daliฬand the psychoanalytic pioneer Sigmund Freud, he began experimenting with dream journals and painting in dream-state, using this method to understand the relationship between the subconscious and his own self. The recurring motif of multiple eyes in his transformative portrait works represents the all-seeing eye and the path to the gateway of the soul, while also expressing the anxiety of self-awareness.

The artist has been affected by protanopia since childhood. Due to the impaired functioning of the cones that perceive the corresponding colours, he loses the ability to distinguish between red and green under certain lighting conditions or the influence of substances, and sometimes even struggles with identifying yellow and blue.

The exhibition title is derived from his latest series, โ€œProtanopia Blues,โ€ in which the artist humorously embraces the pun between a blue-dominant visual composition and the musical genre of blues. This series of works is an extension of his recent exploration of monotone line-based apparitions, primarily using muted tones and incorporating elements of indigenous art styles. It guides the viewers into a semi-trance state and invites them to see the world through his unique colour perspective.

About the Artist @diggitydouglas

Diggity Douglas is a Spanish fine artist based in Hong Kong. His fascination with the subconscious influences his approach towards his craft. Inspired by Salvador Daliฬ's psychoanalytic studies of dream symbolism and Picasso's reconstruction of perspectives in portraiture, he wields personalised objects to create distorted humanoid figures.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at the Arts University Bournemouth, UK in 2016. His first solo exhibition at Chez Trente in Hong Kong provided him the footing to establish himself as an emerging artist, with his โ€œIce Creamโ€ series. Douglas has recently experimented with mural work, creating homages to the late MF Doom and Tupac Shakur for the Dead Poets bar in Hong Kong.
