About the event
Following the premiere of Raymond Yiu’s Old Bei with the HK Phil in 2021, Jaap van Zweden conducts another HK Phil commission by the Hong Kong composer - a Violin Concerto that pays homage to the tumultuous life and prolific legacy of the great Chinese violinist, Ma Sicong. The work was especially written for soloist Esther Yoo, who wowed Hong Kong audiences as a young prodigy in 2013. Yiu’s new concerto is aptly framed by two works by Beethoven: the overture from Fidelio announces the victory of justice, while the exuberant Seventh Symphony brings solace in the face of hardship.
