SIFAS Festival of Arts 2024: Rukmini Kalyanam, a Dance Drama Information

Originally conceptualise and produced by the highly-acclaimed Kalakshetra Foundation from Chennai, India, this spectacular dance drama tells the love story of Rukmini and Sri Krishna through intricate dance and music.

The narratives begins with King Bishmaka, who wishes to arrange the marriage of his daughter Rukmini to Sri Krishna. However, this angers his son Rukmi, who disapproves of the marriage. Lovelorn, Rukmini sends a letter to Sri Krishna through a messenger, expressing her devotion to him. Moved by this letter, Sri Krishna takes Rukmini away from her ill fate, spurring her brother Rukmi into action. Enrage, Rukmi instigates a battle between him and Sri Krishna, which he ultimately loses. Sri Krishna spares Rukmi and proceeds to solemnise his wedding to Rukmini with celebratory festivities.
