Arab Arts Focus—Anchoring | Hong Kong Arts Festival 2024 | Show Introduction

A ritualistic solo work celebrating the resilience and power of women
Anchoring, a solo work created and performed by female Egyptian choreographer and dancer Salma Salem, is an affirmation of women’s ability to create and endure, and their struggle for liberation from cultural, social, traditional, religious and even financial dominance.
Salem reclaims the social and political power of the female body, centering on the womb as the primordial symbol of life and strength. Anchored to the earth and drawing energy from it, her strong yet gentle movements embody the determination of women to rise up and find freedom. Intense and ritualistic, Anchoring is a celebration of the female body, combining strength and femininity to express the power and resilience of women.
Based in Cairo, Salem has been practising contemporary dance and physical theatre since 2011. She has appeared in cities such as Paris and Berlin, and has performed Anchoring at festivals in Munich, Marrakech and Cairo.
New Palestine x Hong Kong Work
Complementing the female perspective of Anchoring is another new solo piece created by Hong Kong choreographer/dancer Sudhee Liao with Palestinian director/composer Samar Haddad King. Get ready for a stimulating encounter in which the clashes and connections between female artists from different cultures generate new perspectives.
