Arab Arts Focus—Losing It|Show Introduction

Two female artists from Palestine explore the past and present of their troubled homeland, and their own identities
Co-created by female Palestinian artists Samaa Wakim (solo dancer, choreographer) and Samar Haddad King (live music and soundscape), Losing It is a journey through memory, fantasy and reality that explores how the trauma of growing up in a land of constant conflict has impacted their identities, both as artists and as women.
Accompanied by live music and an intensely atmospheric soundtrack featuring field recordings made throughout Palestine, this solo performance dives into Wakim’s memories of living with constant fear and uncertainty, as if walking a tightrope. How do you keep your balance when your world is disintegrating? What fantasies of hope will you create to help you survive?
Based in Palestine, Wakim has presented dance performances internationally in cities such as London, Brussels, Hamburg and Paris. Multidisciplinary artist Haddad King is Artistic/Founding Director of Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre in New York and has staged her works on four continents.
New Egypt x Hong Kong Duet
The performance of Losing It will be preceded by a new duet created by Egyptian dancer/choreographer Salma Salem and Hong Kong dancer Peggy Lam. Expect an exciting encounter of pure movement presented by two female dancers from different socio-cultural backgrounds.
