NO.60 by Pichet Klunchun Dance Company｜Show Introduction
Modernising the traditional khon dance of Thailand, one step at a time
Pichet Klunchun deconstructs the 59 poses of the ancient khon dance and asks: what would be the 60th pose? NO.60 is the result of the Thai dancer and choreographer’s two decades of research into traditional khon dance, which has a 700-year history.
Pichet is one of the most influential game-changers in the Thai dance scene today and he’s made it his mission to modernise this ancient form of masked dance that dates back to the Ayutthaya Kingdom. In the performance NO.60, Pichet takes the 59 traditional khon poses as a starting point and gradually deconstructs them, leaving the audience with an open invitation to interpret what would be the 60th pose.
By removing the traditional mask and costumes, and revealing the pure essence of khon, Pichet presents a performance full of cultural significance and breathes new life into this ancient art form.
This production premiered in Japan, and has been performed at the Esplanade in Singapore, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre and the Tanz im August Festival in Berlin to critical acclaim.
