Miwa Matreyek's World of Animation｜Show Introduction

Multimedia artist Miwa Matreyek interacts with animation as a shadow silhouette in family-friendly performances that have previously been staged at prestigious events and venues such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. People of any age can enjoy this journey into dreamlike worlds that explore the relationship between humans and nature. According to the Los Angeles Times, it is an experience “unlike anything you’ve seen before”!

The digital and the biological come together seamlessly in multimedia performance artist Miwa Matreyek’s one-woman shows, which transport the audience into whimsical dreamlike realms where previously invisible worlds become visible.

During her live performances, the performer, animator, director and designer interacts with projections as a shadow silhouette. These works exist at the intersection of the cinematic and the theatrical, and often incorporate surreal and poetic narratives about the conflict between humanity and nature.

Matreyek will be presenting three works—Infinitely Yours was created to spark a discussion on climate change, This World Made Itself takes the audience on a rich journey through the history of the earth, while Myth and Infrastructure sees Matreyek traversing through ocean scenes, cityscapes and domestic spaces to conjure up dreamlike scenes using light and shadow.

Her shows feature no dialogue, so audiences of different ages or backgrounds can enjoy the magic that happens when real and animated worlds collide.

About the artist——Miwa Matreyek

Miwa Matreyek received her MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media from CalArts in 2007, and since graduating she has performed her interdisciplinary shadow performances all around the world at events and venues including TED, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Lincoln Center, the Sundance New Frontier programme and the Future of Storytelling conference. Her work appeals to people of all ages and is “unlike anything you’ve seen before”, according to the Los Angeles Times.
