Petits Rats｜Elisa Sighicelli Solo Exhibition Introduction

Elisa Sighicelli’s second solo exhibition at Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong, 𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒔, opens on 20 May through 4 July. The nineteenth century French term “les petits rats'' describes young ballerinas-in-training at the Paris Opera, and these figures had been depicted frequently in the paintings and sculptures of Edgar Degas. 73 of his bronzes belong to the permanent collection of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, and Sighicelli photographed the assemblage in the museum storeroom as they were arranged in random placement. Moving a single portable light around, Sighicelli elicits the dramatic interactions between the bronzes through the combination of lighting and framing - the photographs insert a false flow of temporality over the sculptures, and invite viewers to look into the historical reality of les petits rats.
