Pelle Cass: Photographs|Exhibition Introduction

Untitled-1-178

Pelle Cass, the photography artist from Boston who is well-known for his unique “still time-lapse images”, will hold his first solo art exhibition in Asia at “Gallery by the Harbour” in Harbour City from 1 to 26 March 2023. Pelle Cass has specially created a brand-new artwork at a popular photography spot in Hong Kong for this exhibition, which is also his first artwork featuring this urban city. The “Pelle Cass: Photographs” exhibition is curated by Way by Way of Difference and will showcase 15 artworks including his signature “Crowded Fields” series featuring different sports and 5 latest artworks that are displayed for the first time.

Pelle Cass has specially created a brand-new artwork at a popular photography spot in Hong Kong for this exhibition, which is also his first artwork featuring Hong Kong. He worked remotely with the curatorial team Way by Way of Difference, and the team spent 2 days taking over 23,800 photos and over 2 weeks to choose 1,203 photos for editing use. Pelle Cass has looked through many photos and pictures in Hong Kong, in which the Instagram-famous place has drawn his eyes to become the brand-new artwork of his “Crowded Fields” series.

Collaborates with magazine and fashion brands for his unique “still time-lapse images”

The artwork of Pelle Cass makes a mess of time and space by combining many photos into a kind of still time-lapse image that denies sequence and embraces chaos. He takes thousands of photos and compiles the selected figures into a final artwork. He changes nothing—not a pixel. He simply selects what to keep and what to omit and everything stays in its exact, original place in the frame.

Pelle Cass has collaborated with various magazines and brands including New York Magazine, Burberry, Jacquemus, Valentino and more. Last December, New York Magazine featured 72 celebrities that embody New York for its 18th annual “Reasons to Love New York” Magazine cover. Pelle Cass was the person behind this intensive project, squeezing 72 celebrities in this one image while they were still recognizable. This was the most complicated project from his experience, and it became one of his iconic works. He has also collaborated with Magazine Antidote and Valentino in 2022 to create the image of Valentino Pink PP Collection in the Parisian salons of the house Valentino and on the Place Vendôme.

About Pelle Cass

Pelle Cass is a photography artist from Brookline, Massachusetts. His work makes a mess of time and space by combining many photos into a kind of still time-lapse image that denies sequence and embraces chaos. To make the compositions, he puts his camera on a tripod, takes thousands of photos, and compiles the selected figures into a final artwork. He changes nothing—not a pixel. He simply selects what to keep and what to omit and everything stays in its exact, original place in the frame.

These artworks — of sports, street life, dance, and fashion–are truthful documents of an hour or two. Sometimes the events are staged specially for Pelle Cass. Other times, he is simply documenting something that would have happened without him. But the photos show many things happening at the same time and contain much more information than a conventional still photograph. He approaches his work like a collagist or a painter, but his raw material is remarkably accurate photographic information that, in this new form, conveys a sense of play, the eeriness of time, and a feeling of Dionysian chaos.

The work of Pelle Cass is in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum, the deCordova Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the MFA, Houston, and he’s received fellowships from Yaddo, Artist’s Resource Trust, and the Polaroid Collection. Cass has published in magazines such as Beaux Arts, McSweeney’s, GQ, The New York Times, Die Zeit, The Atlantic, The Economist, and many others and in books, including “Pelle Cass” (Just an Idea), Photoviz (Gestalten), Deleueze and the City (Edinburgh University Press), Langford’s Basic Photography (Focal Press), and The Beautiful Sparkle: Optical Illusions in Art (Prestel).
