Beyond Limits Education Concert Introduction

Trio of musicians harmoniously tune into the power of music

Without a right arm from birth, Adrian Anantawan initially established a career as an international musician, performing around the world and giving talks to teenagers about his experiences. He subsequently returned to school, studying at Yale University and Harvard Graduate School of Education to help young people with different abilities learn music. Despite suffering delayed speech as a child, Anantawan is now a virtuoso communicator as well as performer, combining multiple roles including musician, educator, advocate and arts administrator.

Meanwhile, emerging US pianist Leigh McAllister has found music a key route to confidence and acceptance of herself and others. McAllister, who was adopted by two physiotherapists at the age of two, was born without a left elbow and three fingers on her left hand. She has gone on to specialise in collaborative piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston, a discipline combining piano performance and accompaniment. Her hope is “to share music’s healing qualities with others”, she said.

In this concert, pre-recorded in the US, Anantawan teams up with McAllister in a special “No Limits” showcase, featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann and Molly Joyce, a contemporary US composer and performer. Joyce has also found music an effective channel for moving on from the trauma of permanent damage to a hand following a car accident at the age of seven. A creative energy extravaganza.
