How to define diverse abilities and change public attitudes while bridging the generation gap, time and space?
Established 30 years ago, Birds of Paradise was Scotland’s first touring theatre company to employ disabled and non-disabled actors. Deploying the company’s characteristic wit, insight, and authenticity, including the lived experiences of disabled children and adults, The Super Special Disability Roadshow is the zesty work of artistic director Robert Softley Gale.
Initially commissioned by Edinburgh International Children’s Festival 2021 as a pre-recorded programme, this effervescent adapted version blends both the original humorous film and live performance to intuitively highlight the differences that exist in disabled identities, including those spurred by the generation gap.
Here, time has moved on and Sam, the passionate young producer of The Super Special Disability Roadshow film, remains frustrated that disability equality is not changing fast enough. They embark on a global tour, including Hong Kong, to show more people the movie and gather additional stories from around the world.
