Exhibition Introduction

Spring Garden 2022 1024px

“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest… People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.” ― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

The pandemic in various places across the globe is still fluctuating, limiting social gatherings. Like a false spring, we are in a loop of hope and disappointment, relief, and anxiety. Various social distancing restrictions have affected our lifestyle to change from a collective one to more of that of an individual one. Learning to live alone becomes a new norm.

Hemingway may have inspired us to enjoy spring more when being alone and to find the mental space to contemplate, feel, and appreciate what is around us or find solace in art.

Spring Garden presents 16 oil paintings by Li Xinping from 2004-2015 depicting the enjoyment of spring through scenes of leisure, music, and dance. The figures in Li’s paintings appear to be frolicking and immersed in the natural environment. One can almost feel the breeze, smell the fragrance of the flowers or hear the sound of swings in the wind.

His art provides a safe haven, a mental space “where there are no problems and where we can be the happiest.”
