Following the success of this special exhibition at Fine Art Asia last fall, Explorations In Color Part II appears as a limited time event at PMQ*, February 4 to March 10, 2022.
Discover Kan-Zan-Loc, Pang Yongjie, Yoichiro Nishimura, and Toshio Iezumi, four artists whose use of color in their art is so different and yet connects them.
Explorations in Color
Explorations in Color examines the way these contemporary artists: Kan-Zan-Loc, Pang Yongjie, Yoichiro Nishimura, and Toshio Iezumi use color. Each artist is known for working with and using color, their artistry and skills to produce beautifully executed and distinctive paintings, fine art photography and sculpture. The way each of these artists use color is unique, a part of their identity, their trademark.
Kan-Zan-Loc (b. 1964) uses Ganryo a traditional Japanese paint made out of powdered shellfish, dyed with indigo-plant-blue, to create his vibrant color saturated abstract expressionistic line paintings. The artist grinds the pigments by hand. It is then mixed with water to the correct consistency before application, a painstaking and laborious process.
Pang Yongjie (b. 1968) uses thickly applied strokes of oil paint on canvas to create Cubist interpretations of Tang Dynasty women. Abstracted to the greatest extent, Pang’s figures retain the robust sensuality of that era, using the simplicity of his lines and form to celebrate the intimacy between people. With the color palette restricted to 4 tones for each work, the actual choice of colors reflect the artist’s mood and the changing seasons.
Whether capturing images with his Hasselblad camera or using his scangram technique, there is one common thread in Yoichiro Nishimura’s (b. 1967) photographic images, they are monochromatic. His images document life’s journey, studies of light and shadow that reveal and yet conceal the mysteries and wonders of nature.
Toshio Iezumi’s (b. 1954) material of choice is glass. Using a cold-glass process, Iezumi uses an ultraviolet curable adhesive to fuse layers of sheet glass together which are then hand shaped with the aid of an air grinder to create the desired form. The layers of glass become a prism reflecting and refracting light, giving Iezumi’s sculptures an emerald green hue.
