Concert Introduction

Jakub Hrůša conducts the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra: life, death and tradition
They say music is a language that transcends borders—and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra knows all about that. Born amid the turmoil of 20th century Europe into a tradition that draws on different cultures, this great German orchestra is renowned for the energy of its playing and the freshness of its artistic vision: all rooted in a way of music-making that goes back centuries. In three concerts livestreamed from its home, the Joseph Keilberth Hall in Bamberg, under energetic Czech chief conductor Jakub Hrůša, the orchestra explores its own Central European roots in Smetana’s stirring Má Vlast, and contemplates the infinite with Bruckner’s and Mahler’s epic Ninth Symphonies.
