Show Introduction

The world of Chinese opera through the lens of virtuosic piano performances – a visual and musical feast!
Transcending traditional presentations of the genre, a number of Chinese composers have given music lovers fresh renditions of Chinese opera on the piano, developing a unique artistic experience that is faithful to the essence of the form. Reminiscence features three award-winning pianists, Chen Sa, Cheng Wai and Yu Xiangjun, who bring their virtuosic interpretations to a piano concert that is a feast for the eyes and ears. Enhanced by interactive lighting effects and visuals, this innovative programme includes works by composers such as Chen Peixun and Zhu Jianer, early pioneers and prolific composers of contemporary Chinese music, and Chen Qigang, the last student of Olivier Messiaen. Steinway’s high-resolution player piano SPIRIO│r will be used for the performance. The concert promises to delight both music and theatre lovers by recreating the sounds and distinctive colours of Chinese opera, and conjuring a vibrant musical portrait of the five key roles (sheng, dan, jing, mo, chou) of the traditional Chinese art form.
