The glacier is deeply significant to the Māori, known as Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, or 'The tears of Hine Hukatere.' According to legend, it was formed from the tears of Hine Hukatere after losing her lover to an avalanche. First described by Europeans in 1859, it was named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria by geologist Julius von Haast in 1865. The name was officially changed to Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere following the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998.
