Great 4.0
It's important to understand that it's just a transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira with three stops on the way (one at a bar with a bathroom and two at places selling argan oil and various items). For the price paid, it's more than fine.

Great 4.0
overall transfer is good. Have four hours in Essaouria for sight seeing is enough. most passengers not too satisfied was that the driver stopped at Medina for long time, more than half an hour for no reason. bus didn’t depart for Essaouria until 9:30 am

Fantastic 5.0
Essaouira is such a refreshing break from the vibrant atmosphere in Marrakech with its laid back and chill vibes. It’s pretty small so the medinas are much easier to navigate. We were pleasantly surprised that food prices were considerably cheaper than in Marrakech. Don’t miss out on the seafood. They were a highlight for us. The hotel pick-up and drop off were so convenient. Our van was comfortable so the 3hours travel time to Essaouira was very manageable, just be ready for a long day. We had almost 5hours to explore which was more than enough time to eat, shop and stroll along the beach. It’s a must visit if you enjoy a slower pace with breathtaking coastal panorama.

What to know before visiting Essaouira Province

About Essaouira

Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is a fortified port town built in the late 18th century, where European military architecture meets Moroccan flair. Its medina, perched between sandy beaches and rugged ramparts, is a peaceful maze of art galleries, thuya wood workshops, and ocean views. Known for its constant Atlantic winds, it’s a hub for kitesurfers and windsurfers, while its art scene and Gnaoua music festival underline its vibrant creative spirit.

Top 5 Places to Visit in Essaouira

1. Skala de la Ville

The fortified walls of Skala de la Ville are one of Essaouira’s most iconic landmarks. Lined with 18th-century cannons overlooking the Atlantic, this spot offers incredible ocean views and dramatic sunsets. It’s also a great place to appreciate the city’s historic role as a strategic port.

2. Medina of Essaouira (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Essaouira’s medina is a maze of whitewashed buildings with blue shutters, artisan workshops, and vibrant souks. Stroll through narrow lanes, shop for thuya wood carvings, textiles, and jewelry, or simply soak up the relaxed, less hectic atmosphere compared to Marrakech.

3. Skala du Port

Head to Skala du Port in the late afternoon to catch one of Essaouira’s most unforgettable views. Standing at the edge of the bustling harbor, this historic rampart is lined with 18th-century bronze cannons pointing toward the Atlantic. From the top, you’ll get postcard-perfect views of the walled medina framed by circling seagulls, a scene that feels straight out of a painting. The ramparts are also dotted with artisan shops selling woodwork and crafts. Fans of Game of Thrones may also recognize this spot as Astapor, making it both a historic and cinematic highlight.

4. Moulay Hassan Square

This lively square near the port and medina is the perfect place to sip mint tea, enjoy street performances, or watch daily life unfold. Surrounded by cafés and restaurants with ocean views, it’s a hub of activity both day and night.

5. Essaouira Beach

With strong, consistent winds, Essaouira Beach is one of Morocco’s best spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Beginners will find plenty of schools offering lessons, while advanced riders can take advantage of ideal conditions. For a quieter alternative, nearby Sidi Kaouki is another favorite beach for surfers.

Tips for Your Essaouira Travel

  • Currency: Essaouira uses the Moroccan Dirham. You’ll find ATMs at the airport and throughout the medina, especially near the harbour and Moulay Hassan Square. Keep cash handy, as smaller shops and stalls often don’t accept cards.
  • Weather: That refreshing Atlantic breeze can turn cool, even in summer. Bring a light jacket or scarf for beach walks and rampart strolls.
  • Shopping: Unlike Marrakech, shopping here is more relaxed. Browse handmade crafts, rugs, and woodwork without pressure, if you find something you love, haggle politely for a fair price.
  • Festivals: If you love music and culture, June’s Gnaoua World Music Festival is a must. Prefer peace and quiet? Visit outside festival season for calm beaches and a laid-back coastal rhythm.
  • Alcohol: Many restaurants and bars serve alcohol, and Carrefour is the main supermarket selling it. Note that sales pause on Fridays, the local holy day.
