Hofu Tenmangu Shrine(hoshoan) opening hours: 9:30~16:00(The facility is closed on the next day of Public Holidays.)

  • history museum is currently closed. Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is the first Tenjin shrine built in Japan. Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, who is worshiped as the god of learning. Along with Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (Kyoto) and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (Fukuoka), it is also known as Japan’s Three Tenjin Shrines and is visited by many tourists throughout the year.

Mohri House・Mohri Museum opening hours: 9:00~17:00(last admission 16:30) As one of Japan’s most important feudal families for many centuries, the Mohri clan accumulated many treasures. The Mohri Museum has a collection of some 20,000 items, which are displayed in a series of rotating exhibitions throughout the year.

Suo Kokubunji(Kondo) opening hours: 9:00~16:00 Day off:Monday(The facility is closed on the next day of Public Holidays.) Suo Kokubunji was founded in 741 at the decree of Emperor Shomu (701–756). Suo Kokubunji is unique in that it still stands in its original precincts (though the temple compound is now slightly shorter on its east-west axis) and with many of its key buildings still in their original locations. This fact was established when the main hall, or kondo, was restored between 1997 and 2004 and the bases of the original pillars were found directly beneath the present one.

Amidaji Temple(Museum Treasures) opening hours: 9:00~17:00 The origins of Amidaji Temple are intricately entwined with Todaiji Temple in Nara. Founded in the eighth century, and long the most important Buddhist institution in Japan, Todaiji was destroyed in 1180 during a clan war. Rebuilding proceeded rapidly, and the Great Buddha statue was fully restored by 1185. Reconstructing the hall that housed the statue demanded a vast amount of timber, so Emperor Go-Shirakawa (1127–1192) sent Shunjobo Chogen (1121–1206), the monk in charge of rebuilding work, to Yamaguchi to cut down and ship back 130 enormous trees.
