◇What is Nohgaku? Noh is a solemn song-and-dance drama performed with distinctive masks and costumes. It is one of Japan’s most representative classical performing arts, with a history of over 650 years. In contrast, Kyogen is a comedic performance that emphasizes dialogue. Noh and Kyogen are traditionally performed together as a set, and collectively they are known as “Nohgaku.” Nohgaku is recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

▪Kyogen: “Bōshibari” Tied to a Pole A sophisticated nonsense comedy about servants who try to steal and drink alcohol while their master is away.

▪Noh: “Aoi no Ue” Lady Aoi Based on the world’s oldest novel, The Tale of Genji, this is a story of love and jealousy featuring a woman who becomes a vengeful spirit and seeks to settle a grudge.
