Reviews
Was a educational tour learning more about Hindu and Buddhist philosophies, a little overloading at times but still enjoyed the overall experience. The sites themselved were very quiet so literally had the whole place to myself which was great! Truly an underrated experience!!
This is a relatively lesser-known tourist attraction, but the tour guide was excellent at explaining history, helping us understand the changes in Indonesian religious beliefs, the relocation of kingdoms, the origins of Balinese architectural styles, and the influence of Hinduism on Indonesia.
Trowulan must be a history buff's delight. For me, without any prior knowledge of Majapahit history, it was quite fascinating to listen to our guide Pak Argus' labyrinth tale of kings and queens, princes and palace intrigues; the arrival of Mongols , its wars , the legends of Hinduism and Buddhism, the spread of Islam and the subsequent migration of the Hindu-Javanese elites to Bali, agrarian migrations to Bromo . It was a delightful educational tour. Highly recommended tour for an understanding of ancient Java.
t was a great experience to have Agus as my tour guide to help me understand the historical, political, religious, and cultural background of Surabaya. It’s memorable and highly recommended if you are keen to historical sites.
It was great experience with the guide Agus. He was professional and had enthusiasm in the local history. His explanation and methodologies were very helpful to understand these historical attractions. We highly recommend!!!
Impressed by our knowledgeable and experienced guide Agus Aliwafa. Without him we would not have been able to appreciate the intriguing history of Surabaya and the Majapahit empire, that we wouldn't have been able to learn elsewhere. Our driver Robert was also very professional and patient. Thank you, Robert and Agus for sharing your time and experience with us. One significant downside is we booked our tour on a public holiday (Hari Raya Haji). The museum and 2 of the temples were closed. It would have been reasonable if the company had informed us beforehand of alternative arrangements for this.
Like a time tunnel bck to history class with perfectly crafted real life time experience
This was a cultural and historical tour. Our English guide, Agus, was the perfect guide. He was passionate about his subject matter and loved to answer our questions. It was a great outdoor tour. Quite hot but it was worth it. We were in awe of the temples and the archeological site. The quality of work was amazing. Some parts were already restored or repaired but most of the parts that were intact after centuries is a gift to modern. You can imagine how these places were bustling with people centuries ago and how they were covered and forgotten until they were rediscovered. Agus did play a good part in bringing them to life for us. He took us to lunch in a local fastfood. We ate using our hands as is the tradition. Food had good flavors, soothing to a hungry tummy. Agus and the driver brought us back to the hotel - tired but safe and happy again.
Taufiq was an insightful and professional guide. He did a marvellous job in bringing us around the area of Trowulan, the capital of the Majapahit empire. The tour included a museum visit, four candi visits, lunch and coffee at a Javanese compound. We were a group of six, and were fetched in a comfortable van from our hotels out of Surabaya. Taufiq's English is excellent and made sure to provide enough historical context for each of us to understand the importance and uniqueness of the temples and historical artefacts. We found the tour thoroughly enriching and would recommend to anyone interested in a taste of maritime Southeast Asia's early modern history.
Our guide and driver were both excellent. They explained everything in detail and were able to fully answer any questions we had. They even took us to see another attraction that we mentioned. Overall, it was very worthwhile, except for the food which was quite ordinary.
