What to expect

korean decorative painting

When viewing Korean decorative paintings we get a warm sense of hope. Since the early times our ancestors have expressed their wish to live happily ever after, by depicting and borrowing ideas from nature. When we see a bird or flower in a painting we begin to grasp the meaning of the painting as a story unfolds. You can sense this same expression of hope and happiness as you dive deeper into Korean decorative painting.

Painting of Auspicious Patterns

Munja-do was created with the intention of achieving the desired wish through letters with moral or auspicious meanings. The most elaborate from munja-do, called hyoje-do, depicts eight Chinese characters representing eight moral principles: filial piety, brotherly love, loyalty, trust, propriety, rightousness, honor and sense of disgrace. The eight are sometimes combined with other auspicious motifs. Takeneou together, they create overlapping meanings, while offering the viewer an engaging visual experience. As time goes by, Munja-do shows more emphasis on painting. Sometimes the form of a letter was almost ignored, focusing more on decorating rather than on the meaning of the letter. So, the middle form of writing and painting was drawn gradually. Interesting and various painting were drawn, and many painters recreated and painted these in modern times.

Modern Calligraphy_‘Moment Korea’

While faithfully preserving it’s proud past, Seoul continues to create a path into the future where tradition and modernity coexist. While there is a metro running under the city spread with high-rise skyscrapers; Gyeongbokgung Palace and Hanoks (traditional Korean buildings) are still located in the middle of it; being home to some of Asia’s oldest enclaves.

What was your first impression of Seoul? What do you remember most? In addition to the letters SEOUL; we have included a few important landmarks and symbols. You may have stood in front of the statue of Admiral Yi-Sun-Shin (one of the greatest naval commanders in history.) which proudly stands protecting Gwanghwamun (the largest and main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace). Road on a subway car crossing the bridge over the Han River (Hangang) or even traveled by foot or cable car up Namsan Seoul Tower. Certainly we can’t forget Haetae, the mythological guardian that fends off fires and disasters; which you may have come across in front of many buildings and structures in Seoul. Creating these selections of art will be a great time for you to remember the harmonious blend of old and new. With this special design you can reminisce about the excitement, joy and surprises you experienced while traveling throughout Seoul.
