What to expect
Chongqing 1949 Grand Theatre, located in the Ciqikou Ancient Town Scenic Area of Shapingba District, Chongqing, is a large-scale, real-scene theater in Chongqing custom-built for the play "Chongqing 1949." It is also currently the world's leading single indoor theater. Chongqing 1949 Grand Theatre has a total construction area of 25,000 square meters, a building height of 28.6 meters, and can accommodate 1,497 spectators.
"Chongqing·1949" is set in Chongqing on the eve of liberation in 1949. It tells the story of "many members of the Chinese Communist Party imprisoned in Zhazidong and Bai Gongguan, who withstood all kinds of torture, unyielding and unbowed, preferring death to submission," and reproduces the grand scene of the liberation of Chongqing and the defense of the city. The story ends on the day of Chongqing's liberation, with a group of revolutionary martyrs who, to uphold their great ideals and lofty beliefs, fell on the road of breaking through the darkness and heading towards dawn, accompanied by the gunfire of Chongqing's liberation, "dedicating their precious lives to the cause of the liberation of the Chinese people," thereby "condensing into the 'Red Rock Spirit'."
This is a grand work that practices the requirement that literary and artistic works should be "strong, moral, and warm" and "strive to demonstrate the beauty of faith and the beauty of the sublime," a red historical drama that shoulders the contemporary mission of "promoting the Red Rock Spirit and inheriting the red gene." "Chongqing•1949" re-interprets the "Red Rock Classic" from a broader spatial and temporal dimension, presenting different narrative scenes in multiple dimensions at the same time, forming a spatial artistic conception with a montage-like interpretation method, allowing the audience to receive a spiritual baptism of red culture through a highly shocking immersive experience and a comprehensive and three-dimensional sensory impact.

A truly amazing theatre experience! 🎭✨ The rotating seats and moving stage made the show feel incredibly immersive, as if we were part of the performance. The seamless transitions, impressive visuals, and unique stage setup kept me engaged throughout the entire show.
it was easy to get in as they contacted us beforehand to confirm our purchase and attendance. they checked our preferred showtime. I also got the one-way ticket for the cableway to be used on the same day. the operator who messaged me was friendly and helpful. I researched before selecting the seats. the first 2 section in front will rotate as the show is playing. section B has more view coverage with lesser movement than the section A that’s the closest to the stage. there is earphones to translate the show but I missed it. even without knowing the full story, the songs, emotions by the performers will keep you captivated. the stage that’s made up of stairs will rotate. performers walk and run up and down. some will fly down from the wires At the top where you came even see. definitely worth watching.
I completely understand why this gets 5 stars—it is easily one of the coolest shows I’ve seen. The standout feature is definitely the 360-degree seating, which actually rotates the audience around to follow different massive sets as they change. The production value is top-notch, using great special effects, lighting, and aerial stunts that make you feel like you're right in the middle of a movie. It tells a pretty heavy, emotional story about the city's history right before the 1949 liberation, and the cast does an amazing job keeping the energy up. If you're visiting Chongqing, it's definitely worth checking out.
Booking tickets on KLOOK gave us peace of mind as we just needed to go to the theater and redeemed the tickets with our passports. The performance was great, and if you do not understand Mandarin Chinese, there is a translator device available to use but you will have to pay a deposit of RMB150 which is refundable upon return of device. To be honest, the translation was a bit slow compared to what the performers were saying on the spot. Be sure to get the revolving seats to enjoy the performance fully.
We were absolutely blown away by this show. This is not just a performance — it’s an immersive journey through history that pulls you right into the heart of Chongqing 70 years ago. The rotating 360-degree auditorium was a standout feature, allowing the scenes to unfold. The staging, sound, lighting, and choreography were all world-class. Every scene was dramatic and emotionally powerful, with seamless transitions and stunning visuals that captured the spirit and resilience of the people of Chongqing during that turbulent time. A must see if you are in Chongqing.
I bought the ticket through Klook. When I arrived, I went to ask the staff, who could speak English. They told me to go inside to get the paper ticket. After receiving the ticket, I went to the entrance according to the seating zone I booked. The staff scanned it and I could then go to my seat. I bought Zone B. The stage can rotate back and forth, which adds a different kind of fun.
A moving and dramatic portrayal of Chongqing’s history. Very good effects. Easy to redeem tickets from ticketing desk. Had good seats in the middle of zone A, which rotates around stage.
Thoroughly enjoyed this theatrical play. Amazing rotating stage set up. Would definitely recommend getting tickets for seating area A n B where the seats move together in conjunction with the stage for a more unique experience.
Possibly one of the most stunning shows I've ever seen with jaw-dropping stagecraft and a scale you must see to believe. We chose a deluxe seat in the B section which means you're positioned further back than the A section for a more expansive view with the deluxe bit meaning you're more in the centre. Great seats. The English audio guide was picked up from the ticket office for a refundable deposit and whilst not particularly well synced with the actual performance did help enough.
Beautiful show. Free translator was available at ticket office. Section B is the best view. The moving seats felt weird at first but I eventually got used to it. It added to the dyanamic theater experience.
