One of the worst experiences Ive ever had! I would not recommend staying at the Best Western Carlsbad by the Sea—even if you paid me. From the moment we arrived, it was obvious this property is in desperate need of a complete renovation. The hotel is extremely rundown, poorly maintained, and feels neglected. The entrance is dark, and the narrow parking lot leading into the property makes it difficult to navigate, especially at night. The elevator looked ancient, and every ride felt like it might be its last. I genuinely wasn’t confident it would make it to the third floor. Our room wasn’t any better. It had a strong musty odor the moment we walked in. The bathroom looked like it hadn’t been updated in decades, and the blackout curtains were so old and worn out that they wouldn’t stay closed. We actually had to use a safety pin just to keep them shut so we could get some sleep. The room keys constantly stopped working. They seemed to become demagnetized for no apparent reason, forcing me to make multiple trips back to the front desk just to get new key cards. The biggest issue, however, was the cleanliness. We always check for bedbugs when we travel, and while we didn’t find any, we discovered something almost as disturbing—ants in one of the beds. We ended up flicking multiple ants off the bedding. It was awful! The experience was so unpleasant that, despite prepaying for two nights, we decided to leave the next morning and not asking for a refund. Never again!

Great
Room was clean but kitchen had no utensils, glasses, bowls, dish towels or paper towels Shelves were completely void of anything. Couch was not comfortable narrow and no real way to get comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was a joke family’s are on vacation and you cut food off early. The pool area was nice but there was trash all over, suggestion either don’t allow food/beverages or have signs that state you must clean up after yourself. Make More towels available. Having ice makers on all floors was great. We typically stay and Best Westerns and sadly this location should have had higher standards considering the location. We hope for better in the future….

Great
The initial room we received had a very distinct musty odor to it. After showering my kids, I noticed the bottom of their feet were black from walking on the carpet in the room. In addition, we were placed on the side along highway which the walls nor windows drown the sound out. Our first night there we got little to no sleep due to the smell of room, the thought of how dirty the carpet were, the noise from the highway. I was already looking for other places to stay once the morning hit because we wouldn’t be able to do another night in that room. However, I called the front desk around 4am to ask if we could have a room change in the morning and explained to the gentleman in the front what was going on. He said he would make a note of it and would be able to switch me rooms once guest checked out. At 8am we received a message that they assigned us another room but wouldn’t be ready until 12pm, which was fine. When we got to our second room, it was a night and day difference. There was no smell. There was no sound from the highway. I’m not sure about the carpet because I didn’t allow my kids to be barefoot in the room. My recommendation would be to ask a room away from the highway when checking in. Also, we asked for addition towels and they mentioned they were also short of towel due to house keeping not keeping up with laundry.

I did not care for the property at all. The room smelled and the overall condition of the hotel was not good.

Good
Great location and plenty of parking. The property is pretty outdated and old. The kids enjoyed the pool, and the free breakfast made this place a good deal. Helped saved on food while on vacation. First night though, we noticed the tv in one of the rooms was broken. They were also completely out of towels our first and second day. I liked that it was close to restaurants and a grocery store. It was nearby our planned activities - Legoland and the beach. Bed is uncomfortable though and the pillows desperately need to be replaced. You’d need to stack 3 of them to even get any kind of support for your head. We were on the freeway side and it was VERY noisy. I am not a light sleeper and I woke up several times in the middle of the night to car noise. We had a suite with two rooms and one of the rooms door plate wasn’t screwed in all the way so the door didn’t close all the way. This was one of the cheaper places around, so I guess for the price it was okay. The employees were very friendly and welcoming though. They made the stay just a little bit better.
