Great

Stayed with kids

Let's start with the positives. The location is excellent for exploring this part of Manhattan, with plenty of attractions, restaurants, and bars within walking distance. Better yet, two subway lines are just a block away, making it easy to reach just about anywhere in the city. The rooms break away from the typical cookie-cutter hotel design with warm wood accents, tasteful lighting, and an overall retro feel. That design carries into the bathroom, which has a vintage-inspired look featuring multicolored tile and brushed gold fixtures that give it a lot of character. The beds are comfortable, complete with crisp white linens and a pillow menu. By New York City standards, the room was generously sized (at least Room 802 was), and the air conditioning was gloriously cold. A feature I always appreciate. The staff was friendly throughout my stay, even while clearly dealing with being a bit understaffed during a hectic Sunday checkout period as I was checking in. There were a few drawbacks. The lobby is surprisingly small, and with only two elevators, waits can become frustrating during peak hours. The bathroom sink also offers almost no counter space, making it difficult to spread out toiletries for one person, not to mention 2. Overall, this is a stylish, well-located hotel that gets the important things right: comfortable rooms, friendly service, and excellent access to the city. While a few design and logistical quirks keep it from being perfect, I'd happily stay here again.

Good

Solo stay

Receptionist at check in was shouting at her colleagues because she wasn't able to do something. At check out, had the same receptionist, she didn't deal with the check out and the guy handling the luggage had to come to the rescue. Needed something printing in the middle of the day and another receptionist (though lovely) had to juggle the roles of concierge and being the only receptionist during a busy period. Why even advertise concierge services if you don't staff them? Restaurant food is fine, overpriced. Destination charge is useless. The hotel room is fine! But there's palm oil based white powder instead of milk?
