About the event
A Gallery Singapore is proud to present acclaimed Chinese artist, Li Yueling, for his first solo exhibition in Singapore, titled “Memories”, from 5 September and closing on Children’s Day on 6 October, 2023.
Li was born in Hebei Province in 1971. He is currently living and working in Beijing. He observes the world with thoughtful insights and a sensitive heart. He chooses children as his main subject matter, upon which he imposes a creative theme as a representation of the beginning of life, as well as of our past, present and future. The basic ideology and sense of value people hold is derived from childhood, when they dared to dream and question. However, as we grow out of childhood, and into adulthood, the innocence, the admiration and the wonder of life is slowly lost, particularly in today’s fast-paced world. It then becomes a fragment of past memories.
Li’s sensitivities to the innocence of childhood and social awareness were also featured when he embarked upon a project for a non-profit organisation in China in 2012, when he stopped taking commissioned work from art galleries and dedicated his time to paint portraits of kidnapped children. This project became hugely successful, bringing about the social awareness of kidnapping in China as a result of the country’s one child policy then. It led to the recovery of many kidnapped children and reunited them back with their families.
Li uses a unique style of painting technique that is powerful yet pure. The complicated social influence and its impact on children, the puzzle, fear, confusion, along with the desire to dream big, breakout of tradition and create a positive impact in the future, are shown in Li’s paintings via the tension between the big brushwork and fine composition – all working in harmony.
About the organizer
A Gallery first opened in Hong Kong in 2007 and opened a Singapore space in 2023. Our art space aims to provide a platform for talented artists to showcase their works to local and international collectors.
We believe our age is defined by the huge cultural changes wrought by technology, conflicts, and social issues. This makes for new forms of exciting expressions and ignites exploration of new art experience and content. We are excited to explore this journey together with all the art lovers.
Art being a personal statement and the storyteller of both the artist and the collector, help them relay a clearer purpose of why it is not only a visual object, as there is meaning, and history behind every little detail—and that’s what makes it important. Being advocates of sustainability, inclusion and diversity, A Gallery Singapore aims to support the growth of local art scene and provide a platform for artists to express themselves.
