The Seed of Peace|Giorgiko Solo Exhibition Introduction

Giorgiko, The Seed of Peace, 2023, Oil on Canvas, 30” x 30”
WOAW Gallery is pleased to present The Seed of Peace, a solo exhibition by the Los Angeles-based artist duo Giorgiko. Partnered with Thinkspace Projects, the exhibition features 25 new oil paintings and ink drawings that explore the search for peace in its different forms and the costs of obtaining it. The exhibition is on view at WOAW Gallery’s location at Sun Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, from April 26 to May 25, 2023, which also celebrates the artist duo’s first showing in Hong Kong.
Through the journeys of childlike characters, Giorgiko takes viewers on a captivating exploration of the pursuit of peace. The characters navigate scorched lands, tumultuous storms, and wild dogs in search of shelter. In this new series of artwork, a divine seed is a centrepiece that grows into a pure white olive tree, standing in gentle contrast to the chaos of the environment, offering peace to the children. Giorgiko draws inspiration from the sacred story of Christ's self-sacrificing death and resurrection, which bring peace to many. The exhibition presents a parallel story: the death and rebirth of a seed, which grows into a new plant and offers shade to all who would rest under it.

Giorgiko, Outta Control, 2023, Oil on Canvas, 72” x 48”
Giorgiko’s unique interpretation of this story offers viewers a fresh perspective on the search for peace. Viewers are invited to contemplate their own sources of peace in temporal and lasting forms. Giorgiko's work reminds us that peace cannot be forcefully taken or manufactured but rather needs to be planted gently.
Giorgiko is the artist duo of husband-and-wife artists Darren Inouye (b. 1989, LA) and Trisha Inouye (b. 1989, LA). Giorgiko’s work deals with the affective dimension of the human experience through their childlike characters and mysterious dogs who represent the innocence and carnality of the human spirit and soul. Through moody landscapes and childlike characters, Giorgiko hopes to create a universe paralleling our own that opens a window into seeing ourselves and others sincerely and truthfully in all of our flaws and beauty.

About the Artist
Giorgiko
Giorgiko (pronounced JOR - jee - koh) is the artist duo of husband-and-wife artists Darren Inouye (b. 1989, LA) and Trisha Inouye (b. 1989, LA). Giorgiko’s work deals with the affective dimension of the human experience through their childlike characters and mysterious dogs who represent the innocence and carnality of the human spirit and soul.
Giorgiko’s work combines the simple sweetness of Trisha’s characters with Darren’s street influence, classical painting techniques, and playfully anachronistic elements, allowing their characters to transcend space and time. Through the harmonious blending of classical and contemporary in their paintings and drawings, Giorgiko explores recurring themes of feeling displaced, discovering empathy, holding onto hope, and retaining innocence. Characters in urban clothing seem stranded in the wilderness, while characters with historical attire loiter in apocalyptic urban landscapes. Long-forgotten space dogs dream of home, and so do pink-haired girls. Through moody landscapes and childlike characters, Giorgiko hopes to create a universe paralleling our own that opens a window into seeing ourselves and others sincerely and truthfully in all of our flaws and beauty.
