Rent a car in Amsterdam

Explore Amsterdam at Your Leisure

Renting a car in Amsterdam offers the freedom to explore the city's attractions and the beautiful Dutch countryside at your own pace. With your rental car, you can easily drive to the iconic windmills at Zaanse Schans, which is just a short trip away, or the picturesque Keukenhof Gardens to witness the tulip blooms in spring. Enjoy the convenience of traveling to these destinations without the constraints of public transportation schedules.

Inspect Your Rental Car Thoroughly

Before you set off on your Amsterdam adventure, make sure to thoroughly check the rental car for any pre-existing damage. Document any scratches, dents, or other issues and report them to the rental agency to prevent any misunderstandings when you return the vehicle. It's advisable to take pictures or record a video as proof. Familiarize yourself with the rental agreement, focusing on details like mileage limits, fuel policies, insurance inclusions, extra charges, and driving area restrictions. Remember to refuel the car before returning it to avoid higher charges from the rental agency.

Child Safety Measures

In the Netherlands, children up to 135 cm tall must use an appropriate child restraint system. Most car rental agencies in Amsterdam can provide child seats upon request, but it's best to confirm availability and whether they will be pre-installed in your vehicle. Not having the proper child seat is not only unsafe but also against Dutch law, so ensure this is arranged beforehand if you're traveling with young children.

Be Mindful of Traffic and Parking

Driving in Amsterdam can be challenging due to busy traffic, particularly during rush hours, and the city's extensive network of canals and narrow streets. It's wise to avoid the city center during peak times, typically between 8 am and 9 am, and from 4 pm to 6 pm. Parking in Amsterdam can also be expensive and hard to find, so consider using Park and Ride (P+R) facilities on the outskirts of the city, which offer affordable parking and easy access to public transport into the city center.

Navigation and Cost-Effectiveness

While Amsterdam's public transport system is efficient, renting a car can be a more cost-effective and convenient option, especially if you plan to visit areas outside the city. Rental cars are typically equipped with GPS navigation to help you find your way around. This can be particularly helpful for visiting attractions that are further afield, such as the historic city of Haarlem or the seaside town of Zandvoort.

Convenient Pickup Locations

Amsterdam offers several convenient locations for picking up your rental car, including Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, where you'll find a range of rental companies ready to serve you. Whether you're arriving by plane or train, you can easily find a rental agency to provide you with the perfect vehicle for your travels in and around Amsterdam.

Understanding Dutch Driving Rules

In the Netherlands, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. Road signs are generally in Dutch, but key tourist routes are also indicated in English. It's important to be aware of the extensive network of bike lanes throughout Amsterdam; always check for cyclists before turning or opening your car door. Strict rules against drunk driving are enforced, so never drink and drive. Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws to ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience in Amsterdam.

so easy to book. the location is right next to the doubletree hotel and is on the ground floor so it's easy to find. do note that they need IDP for Singapore driving licences. they have after hours drop off which makes it simpler too

The reception desk is easy to find inside the airport. However, the car pick-up location is in the parking lot, about a ten-minute walk away, and there are no prominent signs. We had to ask passersby and nearby staff for directions to find the pick-up point. The staff were happy to help, and the vehicle was in excellent condition.
