A virtual film festival hosted by YouTube
Calling all cinephiles! Major film festivals worldwide are coming together on YouTube this May to showcase this year’s selected films right from your living rooms. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, film festivals around the world have been forced to postpone and even cancel their annual event, with Cannes Film Festival having already announced two postponements. In light of this, YouTube and New York’s Tribeca Enterprises have teamed up to produce We Are One: A Global Film Festival, a 10-day virtual film festival.
From May 29 to June 7, 2020, cinema fans will get the opportunity to stream selected films from 20 of the world’s top film festivals, ranging from feature films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy and panel discussions, as reported by Variety. These films will all be available to stream only at www.youtube.com/weareone.
Though the selected films have not yet been announced, a full schedule will be available in the upcoming weeks, most likely through We Are One: A Global Film Festival’s official YouTube page. As for the participating festivals, this includes: Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Guadalajara International film Festival, International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM), Jerusalem Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
More than just a virtual film festival, the online event is said to benefit the World Health Organization and multiple COVID-10 relief organizations globally. Though the event may be free, donation portals will be weaved throughout the online event space.
