  • Named for the fact that you can see 1,000 cherry trees in one visit, the view from the observatory is superb.
  • As a sacred place for Shugendo, there are many old shrines and temples that inherit the history, prayers, and thoughts of cherry blossoms.

What to expect

Mt. Yoshino is famous for its cherry blossoms with its 8km ridge at the northern end of the Omine mountain range. It is said that 30,000 cherry trees fill the valleys and ridges, and the best time to see them is from early to late April. From the foot of the mountain, Shimosenbon, Nakasenbon, Kamisenbon, and Okusenbon bloom in order, and the mountain is dyed beautifully. This cherry blossom originated when En no Gyoja carved Zao Gongen, which inspired him on a cherry tree, and made it the principal image of worship when he opened Kinpusen-ji Temple. It is said that there are about 200 kinds of cherry blossoms, but most of them are Shiroyamazakura. As a religious city, this area was a gathering place for Shugen practitioners and was also the capital of the Southern Court during the period of the Northern and Southern Courts. Shimosenbon is the oldest and most famous cherry blossom community on Mt. Yoshino. The observatory is Empress Shoken's Nodachisho.
