What to expect

Step back in time and catch a glimpse of how Chinese aristocratic families lived centuries ago with a visit to the Gao Grand Courtyard. Located near the end of the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an’s bustling shopping district, the Gao ancestral home sits on 4.2 acres of land and boasts a fantastic array of 86 rooms, 56 of which are open to the public. The courtyard was the former residence of Gao Yuesong, a high ranking official during the Ming Dynasty, and seven generations of his descendants who also served as royal court officials. Here you can appreciate antique furniture and other works of art from the Ming and Qing Dynasties such as delicate porcelain, pottery, and paintings. For an additional fee, you can also watch the shadow puppetry and learn crafts like papercutting. If you visit in the evening, you’ll see all the beautiful red lanterns lit and glowing.
