What to expect
About Your Host We are native Shantou chefs, trained by Chao cuisine master strategist Chen Wenxi. After years of studying Chao cuisine and related delicacies, we have a unique understanding of Chao cuisine, dim sum, and snacks. We run a restaurant locally, and my fellow chefs and I are passionate about cooking. After freeing ourselves from the daily operations, we decided to start a workshop and dedicate ourselves to sharing our culinary passion.
About This Experience “Eat in Guangzhou, savor the flavors of Chao汕 (Shantou & Chaozhou)”. As a native Shantou resident, I certainly won’t take you to overly commercialized places like the Small Park for food! I will lead you to discover authentic, time-honored local eateries that even locals may not know, and experience the authentic local culture of Shantou. Each experience will allow you to sample approximately 5-7 kinds of local delicacies or drinks, such as Douhua (tofu pudding), sweet soup, Guo (粿) snacks, 朥粕粥 (Lao Po Zhou - Teochew congee), sugar-coated scallion pancakes, rice noodle rolls, and mystery herbal tea. Since I know about 45 old shops in the old city alone, I won’t list them all. In addition to the food, I will also take you to visit a local farmers market and learn about the food culture influenced by Chao汕’s unique geographical location. As a local, I will introduce you to the most authentic allusions, etiquette, architectural styles, living habits, and some anecdotes of the old city.
We will first meet at Sanshenren in the old city, and then we will explore the local's favorite restaurants along Jin Xin Road, a famous food street. Along the way, we will walk through some characteristic blocks and local farmers markets as needed to gain a deeper understanding of Shantou's local culture. There's no need for a local like me to take you to places like Small Park, where you can only learn about the local commercial culture. Participants who want to taste the flavors of their hometown should not sign up. We will be tasting authentic local delicacies, and the taste may not meet your expectations.
Other Notes It is best to wear a comfortable pair of sneakers, as we will need to walk a certain distance. Vegetarians are welcome to participate in this food tour, but it is not suitable for strict vegetarians.
