Room too small. Not worth the money

Hotel met our standards of Hampton Inns we've stayed in the past. Staff was friendly and dealt with any issues. The elevators had problems a couple times while we were there (for a week), and both times, repairs were going quickly, and the elevators were back in service in not too long. Cleaning service was really great, and every day. Location was great, breakfast was great too.

Air condition worked well and was relatively quiet. Breakfast was typical hotel breaker but s kept filled and was decent enough. Staff was very friendly.

We stayed 3 nights. 1 of the 2 elevators was broken down the whole time. There was no breakfast even though previous reviews we read stated there was. The biggest issue was that we had an item stolen out of car. We left it there by accident. But the car was parked by valet in a secure facility. No signs of break in. Of course both the hotel and the valet took no responsibility and nothing was done. The items stolen were souvenirs from Harvard University - not sure we can get back that way. Very disappointing.

So the room was very comfortable and clean and the location is great. Great neighborhood, great access to subway and the city. The price is lower than many options in NY, and apparently they allow pets. On the other hand, the ‘amenities’ at the hotel are in shameful condition. Most importantly, one of only two elevators was broken the entire length of my week-long stay. They said they were waiting for a part but I asked the housekeepers and they said the elevator had been out for five weeks (6 by the time I left). Many people were using the stairs, even to go 10 flights or more (my son included). The housekeepers and maintenance also use the one working elevator so you can imaging the waits when they are transporting housekeeping carts, linens etc. I felt so sorry for those housekeepers, who have to put up with this long term. The elevator situation could be dismissed as a one-off, but if you search reviews, you can see multiple periods of time over the last few years when people mention the elevator being out. In addition, four of the five ice machines in the hotel are out of order, one of three workout machines in the gym was broken, the gym tv doesn’t work, nor is that room air conditioned. The staff were lovely, friendly people, but clearly had no intention of fixing any of these things, likely because the owners or manager won’t spend the money.

I needed to be in NYC that unfortunately coincided with the last game of the World Cup so I was prepared to pay an inflated rate. Given that, for what did pay I, at the very least, expected that the 20 story hotel would have more than one functional elevator, that the stopper in the bathroom stink wasn’t broken so you had to grab it with your fingernails to let the water out of the basin, and that the hot water for making tea in the dining area didn’t have coffee grounds in it. I’m actually not that picky when it comes to lodging but given what I paid for the room I expected more than this.

When we first checked told us our room had just been deep cleaned, we go up and there is a large fan taking up half the room and it smeels like a mixture of dirty socks garbage. Go back down told soory only room. I asked to speak to manager and told it will be a bit she is on break. 15 min later mamager comes and suddenly another room is available. Only 1 elevator was working the whole week with no sign of repairs in progress. So waiting hallways with no ac for 20 min to get in elevator with no AC and packed with 10+ people was miserable.
