Fantastic

Stayed with family

This is a very old, historic hotel so I came to it with some skepticism. I had some family visiting from the East Coast and wanted to spend a few nights in San Francisco and usually stay in the large chain hotels. I wanted to do something out of the ordinary and this hotel looked very cool. I noticed it was built in 1908 and started to wonder about amenities and overall upkeep. I will say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the property, rooms, breakfast area and the butterfly bar. We went with suites and I they were very spacious and very well appointed. There was a fireplace and a portable A/C unit we never needed. The breakfast in the dining room was pleasant. It's better than continental, and they seem to keep it well stocked and at the proper temperatures. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the cleaning staff were on top of things. Overall I would recommend this hotel to people who want an authentic old world experience. The hotel is about 2 blocks from Japan Town and that's where we parked for $30.00 a day.

Good

The staff was nice but both the bed and pillows were extremely hard and uncomfortable.

Lovely property, fantastic staff! Surpassed our expectations in every way. I think the pictures really undersell the property.

We loved this charming, historic hotel! The hotel was extremely well maintained and clean with furnishings and artwork appropriate to the history. Our room was very spacious and the bed super comfy. Great bathroom with nice water pressure. We appreciated the complimentary water bottles, coffee service and breakfast in the morning. The location was safe and clean and central to our destinations. I especially loved the hand painted walls in the elevator.

Great

This is a quirky old hotel that I like for it's "character". I live in SF but got a room when i wanted a romantic stay w a friend who was in from out of town for a few days. The Queen Anne Hotel which is a coverted victorian house is just down the block, a great alternative but a bit more expensive. At the Majestic, expect over the top old fashioned canopy beds, antique busy floral matte wallpaper, oddly shaped and very differently sized rooms (depending on type selected), lovely bay windows that open! I liked having a jr "suite" room w a claw foot tub that my partner and I took full advantage of that was on the (rumored to be) haunted 4th floor. The only thing that made it remotely a suite was that it also had a loveseat rather than a chair). I don't really mind and kind of like the slightly dilapidated faded-glory style of the place. If you are looking for "luxury" this might not be it. I was given the wrong room the first night but the thoughtful concierge managed to move me for the subsequent nights and comped me a drink. Key Note: I'd ask for a room on Sutter Street, not Gough St bc of the street noise, and definitely not the first floor.
