Hong Kong Artist Dialogue Series: Lai Kwan-ting Everyday Whispers: Art Installation Introduction

Hong Kong artist Lai Kwan-ting’s art installation Everyday Whispers draws inspiration from Cézanne and Renoir and reinterprets the artistic legacy of the two artists through the lens of contemporary Chinese gongbi painting. Her work pays tribute to Cézanne’s innovative approach of transforming natural scenery into a blend of geometric shapes and colour blocks and celebrate Renoir’s vibrant use of colours and lively brushwork to capture fleeting moments in everyday life. This work is on display alongside “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Cézanne and Renoir Looking at the World — Masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay” exhibition, reinterpreting the styles of these 19th-century Western masters through the lens of contemporary Chinese ink painting.

Born in Hong Kong, Lai Kwan-ting graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2011. She specialises in Chinese meticulous painting (gongbi), depicting portraits and everyday scenes with gentle and delicate brushwork. She was shortlisted for the 2022 Sovereign Asian Art Prize and the Ink Global 2017. She also received awards including the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 and the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009 – Young Artist Award.
