Harbour Wonder|Exhibition Introduction

20230316_Webiste-Header

The exhibition engages local artists, Chan Wai-lap and Tsoi Wai-kuen, to invite the audience to reimagine the neigbouring harbour through two sets of large-scale public art installations. Chan takes the audience into a fantasy world with his work Some of us are looking at the stars, creating a surreal yet familiar public swimming pool. The other set of artwork, presented by Tsoi, A symphony of delights, frames the iconic patterns of the architecture along Victoria Harbour as a unique installation decoration, imprinting every scene in the eyes of the audience.

About the Artist

Chan Wai-lap

Since 2016, swimming pools have featured in the works of Hong Kong artist Chan Wai-lap. Apart from being places to relax, they are also sanctuaries for Chan, spaces in which to meditate and introspect. Almost always, he finds that creative inspiration strikes while he is swimming. Exploring themes such as the public and the private as well as the relationship between self and strangers, his first paintings of swimming pools were serene, aerial views of structures with particular clarity. More recently, he has extended his creative work into other fields, such as installations and happenings (a type of performance art).

Based in Hong Kong, Chan Wai-lap is a graduate of Birmingham City University, where he majored in Visual Communication. Chan has participated in artist residency programmes in Istanbul, New York, and Hong Kong, the latter at Tai Kwun Contemporary. His recent solo exhibitions include “The Lonesome Changing Room” (Hong Kong Art Central, 2021), “I Will Always Be On Your Side” (Tai Kwun Contemporary, 2020), “I Cannot Wait For Three Months” (Halka Sanat Projesi, Istanbul, 2019), and “I Say Marco, You Say Polo” (Fringe Club, Hong Kong, 2019; School of Visual Arts, New York, 2018). He received the Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) of Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2019.

Tsoi Wai-kuen

Hong Kong artist Tsoi Wai-kuen created a set of six art installations with varying forms, both dynamic and static, transforming Art Square in the forecourt of the HKMoA into a public space for relaxation. The installation combines local architectural features, taking inspiration from the iconic buildings and their exterior designs on both sides of Victoria Harbour, visually presenting the Cultural Centre, Convention and Exhibition Centre, and International Financial Centre, among others.

Hong Kong-born registered architect, Tsoi Wai-kuen graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in architecture. Prior to founding the architectural studio AJAR, he participated in projects such as the revitalisation of Central Market and Innovation Tower at PolyU, designed by internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid. In addition to his role as an architect, he is a senior lecturer in the Architecture Department of Zhuhai College and received the 2015 Young Guns International Youth Award and the 2022 Hong Kong Perspective 40 under 40 Award.
