What to expect
Thandwe is the largest town in the south of Rakhine state and serves as springboard for visits to nearby Ngapali Beach. In ancient times, when it was known as Dvaravati, the harbor served as a port of call for Indian seafarers en route to or from the Malay Peninsula. One of the more interesting stops in this tour is the Zalun Monastery, where you can find the perfectly preserved body of a revered monk who died in 1984 in a state of meditation. As a result of his purity, his unspoiled body was placed in a glass coffin and you can see his hair still growing even after more than 30 years since his passing.
