What to expect
The session begins with a 10-minute introduction to the origins and evolution of the Peranakan kebaya in Singapore and the region, including the symbolism behind its motifs, embroidery styles, and materials. This is followed by a demonstration featuring both antique and contemporary kebayas, along with a live explanation of how they are worn with kerosang brooches and kasut manek. Participants will then engage in an interactive appreciation segment, examining the kebayas up close to learn about stitching, fabrics, and design details, accompanied by storytelling on their significance in Peranakan weddings, festivals, and family traditions, as well as guidance on identifying heritage craftsmanship versus modern adaptations
