What to expect

  • "Zen Shaolin: Music Ritual" performance is arranged according to the musical structure, divided into five movements: "Water Music", "Wood Music", "Wind Music", "Light Music", and "Stone Music".
  • "Water Music: Zen Realm" depicts the beautiful Zen imagery of the classic Chinese landscape painting "Travelers Among Mountains and Streams". Starting with water, we meditate with the monks: village girls come from Tang poems, the Bodhi tree chants, the empty mountains are noisy after the rain, the dialogue between monks and laity, everything is transformed into a cool Zen meaning in the sound of the stream, flowing into our hearts.
  • "Wood Music: Zen Meditation" The wooden fish is a Buddhist instrument, but the composer turned it into music. The polyphonic wooden fish performance tells the story of the growth of Shaolin monks: the naughty teenager, the strong youth, the cultivated old age... The legendary shepherdess comes with her flock, and the song breaks the Zen meditation of the wooden fish, bringing the beauty of the world to this pure Buddhist land. Zen, therefore, has a secular explanation.
  • "Wind Music: Zen Martial Arts" begins with "Bodhidharma Facing the Wall", telling the inheritance of a thousand-year-old style. The Shaolin martial arts, interpreted in a new way - wind chimes, wind fists, wind sticks, and wind flags - set off the mountains and forests. In an instant, we realize the great beauty of the world. This is a display of martial arts and a picture scroll of mountains and rivers.
  • "Light Music: Zen Enlightenment" is the gorgeous movement of the performance. Snow-covered landscapes and cold forests, pagoda shadows in the Buddha's light, and long-gone eminent monks appear in illusions, telling us Zen stories. Spring, summer, autumn and winter, the seasons cycle in the music, and the monks on the plum blossom piles seem to break through the limitations of life, stretch upward, transform into spirits of heaven and earth, and fly into eternity.
  • "Stone Music: Zen Ode" is the chant of the performance, playing the grand realm of "cultivating Zen in the mountains, and stubborn stones speaking". At the end of the performance, the Buddha's light shines everywhere, and the world is peaceful. This is Zen's chanting of nature, its love for life, and its praise for all things in the world.
  • "Zen Shaolin: Music Ritual" takes the natural landscape of Mount Song as its natural stage, the cultural connotation of Shaolin and Zen as its foundation, and music, dance, martial arts, and lighting as its carriers for a large-scale live performance. The live performance site is located in the Songshan Canyon. The 180-degree panoramic vision, the beautiful mountains and clear springs, and the looming ancient temples and Zen courtyards constitute the real background of the performance. The most fluid three-dimensional sound and the natural sounds such as the sound of water, wind, and insects on the scene constitute a panoramic three-dimensional sound field. Combined with the grand art lighting project, the Central Mountain, which has been sleeping for thousands of years, shines again, reflecting the world. Grand momentum, grand lineup, grand atmosphere, very shocking and soul-washing.
  • "Zen Shaolin: Music Ritual" was jointly created by Mei Shuaiyuan, the founder of Chinese landscape live performances, Tan Dun, an internationally renowned musician, Yi Zhongtian, a famous scholar, Shi Yongxin, abbot of Shaolin Temple, and Huang Doudou, a Chinese dance artist. Master Tan Dun has devoted himself to the excavation,整理与再创作of Zen music. After a long period of sketching in Mount Song, the holy mountain of culture, and multiple comprehensive contacts and wisdom collisions with the ancestral court of Zen, Shaolin Temple, he created this organic music known as "Buddhist Passion Music" by the world——"Zen Shaolin: Music Ritual", guiding us to re-recognize ourselves and return to our spiritual home. The performance you are about to see, because of its profound and broad connotation, its value far exceeds the scope of general performances. It takes Zen and Shaolin martial arts as carriers to display and interpret a broad and profound Chinese cultural realm.
  • The 5-square-kilometer mountain live stage, the 20-meter-diameter artificial moon, the 1,400-meter-high Buddha laser image, the more than 2,800 stage lighting equipment extending to the top of the mountain, the all-round and three-dimensional sound equipment that fully meets the auditory needs of 3,000 audiences, and the somersaulting and fighting of martial arts actors in the 80-meter-high air are all features of the performance.
  • "Zen Shaolin: Music Ritual" has been successively rated as "National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base", "China Creative City - City Cultural Card", "2008 China Creative Industry Advanced Unit", etc. In the national "Most Beautiful Five Live Performances" selection activity, it won the first place in online voting and is a masterpiece of Chinese live performances and a "new business card" for Henan cultural tourism. It is a must-see performance in Henan.
