Wanderer's Heart|Calvin Poon Yuen Leung's Solo Exhibition

Touch Gallery is proud to announce a special exhibition in collaboration with renowned Hong Kong-based curator Heiman Ng, showcasing the works of Calvin Poon Yuen Leung, one of Hong Kong's most celebrated Cantopop lyricists.

Born in 1958, Poon, often referred to as the "Wandering Lyricist," has penned over 1,000 Cantopop songs since the 1980s, earning global acclaim in the Chinese pop music scene. He is renowned for his emotionally rich and nuanced lyrics, masterfully weaving complex emotions into accessible words that resonate across generations. In 2019, he was honoured with the prestigious "CASH Hall of Fame Award" by the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) in recognition of his monumental contributions to the city's music industry.

This exhibition, titled "Wanderer's Heart", features 20 of Poon's original lyric manuscripts, meticulously preserved over the years, alongside 27 newly created calligraphy pieces. Visitors will be transported through time, revisiting the golden era of Cantopop with classics such as "Farewell to Campus"《告別校園時》and "Maybe We Were Young"《也許當時年紀少》. The exhibition also delves into themes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery through iconic songs like "Old Lover"《舊情人》, "Why Did I Let You Go"《我為何讓你走》, and "Elegy of Love"《愛的輓歌》. Poon's works capture the bittersweet ache of longing ("Deep Words Left Unsaid" 《情深說話未曾講》), the solitude of sleepless nights ("Gazing at the Moon"《望月》), and the enduring power of love ("Hold Tight to the Present"《抱緊眼前人》). Additionally, the exhibition highlights Poon's optimistic outlook and heartfelt wishes for the world through songs like "Marching Forward"《邁步向前》and "With Love"《憑着愛》.

The exhibition also includes a series of calligraphy pieces by Poon, paying tribute to fellow lyricists such as James Wong ("Stormy Clouds"《風雲》), Cheng Kok Kong ("The Wind Continues to Blow"《風繼續吹》), Richard Lam ("Reminiscence"《追憶》), Lo Kwok Jim ("No Regrets in This Life"《今生無悔》), Lin Xi ("Promise"《約定》) and Wyman Wong ("Bicycle"《單車》). Through his fluid and dynamic calligraphy, Poon celebrates the profound camaraderie among Hong Kong's literary and musical talents.

As Hong Kongers, we are grateful for Poon's talent and passion, which have left an indelible mark on our cultural heritage. His self-taught, uniquely expressive "Wandering Calligraphy" offers a fresh perspective for audiences to revisit — and even collect — these timeless classics, ensuring that Cantopop culture endures for future generations.
