Jérôme Bel | Dance Information

The life and art of a French dance legend, interpreted by two visionary Hong Kong artists
French choreographer Jérôme Bel is one of the most important choreographers in the history of contemporary dance. His conceptual dance practice has led to an historical change in the fields of dance, theatre, and contemporary art. His innovative and daring performances, presented in a simple and clean manner, have challenged the very definition of convention and the avant-garde. Essentially, all of his works explore the meaning of a performance, and also what it means to be human.
In 2021, Bel returned to the simplest place. This work, simply titled Jérôme Bel, provides a quick lesson about contemporary performance, but also provides an opportunity to understand how an artist deals with life and a creative career. With a basic format—the lecture performance—he revisits the past 30 years of dance creation, and his 50 years of ups and downs in life.
He has entrusted this personal work to Hong Kong artists to narrate on his behalf. Multimedia artist Enoch Cheng, known for his cross-disciplinary creations, is the director and dramaturg behind this project. Contemporary dance artist Dick Wong, who has persistently contemplated questions related to performance, will play the role of Bel. Together, Cheng and Wong will present the life of this master of choreography.
