• Keeping warm: Wear sufficiently thick clothing, such as a thick down jacket, thermal underwear, cashmere sweater, down trousers, padded cotton trousers, etc., and it is recommended to bring a fleece-lined vest. Tops can be worn in layers so that they can be flexibly adjusted according to temperature changes. For the hat, choose a trapper hat that can cover your ears. Gloves are preferably made of waterproof fabric with fleece lining and touch-screen compatibility. The scarf should be long and large enough to cover the neck, nose, mouth, and even the ears. For socks, choose thermal fleece socks or wool socks, and pack a few extra pairs. For shoes, choose waterproof snow boots with wear-resistant soles, one size larger than usual, and you can add fleece-lined insoles. When engaging in outdoor activities, minimize the exposed areas of your skin. For areas prone to frostbite such as hands, feet, and ears, rub and move them frequently.
• Anti-slip: In winter, Mohe's roads are mostly covered with ice and snow, making it easy to slip and fall. You should wear anti-slip snow boots or anti-slip shoe covers. When walking, keep your hands outside your clothes; in case of a fall, this can act as a cushion. When walking on icy roads, take small steps, keep your footing steady, and avoid running and sudden turns.
• Skincare: The winter climate in the Mohe region is dry and indoor temperatures are high. You need to bring heavy, highly moisturizing face cream and hand cream to protect your skin. It is recommended to wear sunglasses or ski goggles to prevent light reflected from the snow from hurting your eyes (try to avoid wearing glasses with metal frames in winter).
• Camera and phone protection: When outdoor temperatures are low, batteries are easily drained by the cold. Bring several spare batteries, and keep your camera and phone inside your clothing when not in use to prevent the shutter from freezing up due to excessive cold. When entering a building from the outside, use a plastic bag to wrap up your camera to prevent condensation and damage from frost.
• Diet: It is recommended to bring your own thermos so that you can drink hot water at any time outdoors. You can carry a small amount of high-calorie food such as chocolate to replenish energy. Do not drink unboiled water, pay attention to food hygiene, try to choose clean and hygienic restaurants for meals, and avoid eating raw, cold food and unclean drinking water.
• Disease prevention: Carry some common medications such as cold medicine, painkillers, anti-diarrheal medicine, and motion sickness medicine for unexpected needs. At the same time, pay attention to rest, maintain sufficient sleep, and enhance physical resistance.
• Pay attention to your itinerary. Winter days are shorter, so try to avoid outdoor activities in the morning and evening, and choose the 11:00 - 15:00 time slot when temperatures are relatively higher.
• When participating in ice and snow sports, act according to your ability, pay attention to safety, follow the instructions of the staff, and take good protective measures.
• Respect local customs and cultural differences, protect the environment, and do not arbitrarily destroy natural landscapes and the ecological environment.
• Aurora viewing requires favorable timing and conditions (high Kp index, clear skies, zero light pollution). It is a matter of chance rather than expectation, with a low probability of occurrence. It depends on the weather and a bit of luck.
