Wonderfull day trip from hot Sofia to a cooler Rila mountains. Boyana chuch is a bit of dissapointment, but Rila is definitelly worth every cent.
Boyana Church, built in the 13th century. The exterior looks nothing special, and I thought it was a bit unworthy to pay extra, but entering the church is a different world. The staff only let no more than ten tourists in at a time, and then closed the door, which was very mysterious. Inside was a very well-preserved and bright Orthodox mural. Unfortunately, taking photos is not allowed in the monuments, even with mobile phones. The second attraction is the Rila Monastery, which ranks first in Bulgaria as a world cultural heritage. The entire monastery consists of several floors and an Orthodox church. The murals of the latter are very wonderful, consisting of comic strips of Doge telling the history of the Orthodox Church. Whether it is God, man or devil in the painting, they are all vivid and extremely realistic. Although I have never seen God and 👿, I believe that the image should be like this. The three-story building surrounding the church has an exterior wall designed with a color scheme similar to that of a zebra. Even if similar color combinations have been seen in other places, they are definitely not as imposing as here. Being in it is like countless zebras 🦓 running around us.
If you opt for Rila Monastery only without Boyana Church, you will still get the chance to catch a glimpse of the exterior of Boyana Church as well as the garden around it. Rila Monastery is awesome with the paintings and it felt peaceful over there. Remember to prepare 50 cents to use the toilets or you can change it using the coffee machine outside the monastery. The tour agency added in another attraction after Boyana Church at no additional cost. Overall, it’s a great tour but we would prefer if there was time allocated for lunch.
The tour guide is very professional and kind, and he manages the time of guiding tourists very well. The conversation along the way is interesting, and the explanation is also very detailed and concise!
The monastery is not easily accessible, so it is worth participating in this itinerary. The price of the bakery is reasonable, and the mekitsa is fresh, hot and delicious, worth a try.
The entire journey was smooth, comfortable, and well-organized. The vehicle was clean and punctual, and the driver was professional, friendly, and drove safely throughout the trip. The timing was well planned, giving us enough time to explore Rila Monastery at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed. The tour guide also shared useful information along the way and was happy to answer questions, which made the experience even better. This transport tour is perfect for travelers who want a stress-free and reliable way to visit Rila Monastery without worrying about logistics. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bulgaria!
meet up point is easy to find but hard to find our guide bus which details is totally not match the link that share from email but they will give a massage by WhatsApp to inform or find our guide. our tour guide-ms marina is very passionate and will give us some travel tips and informations to let us more enjoy the trip. if you are more interested about history then suggest Rila monastery but not for boyana church.
Amazing monastery with some of the most stunning frescoes you could imagine. Essential day trip from Sofia.
Meet and disperse in the parking lot behind the cathedral in the picture. Basically, whether you buy transportation only, a tour guide, or an audio commentary, the tour departs in the same group, so the experience is the same. The tour guide was very friendly, explained carefully and patiently, and gave plenty of time for free activities. It was a good one-day tour. However, if your hotel or youth hostel offers a one-day tour and the price is about the same, you may reconsider whether to participate in this tour, because it will take some time to get back and forth from the meeting point.
