What to expect

In the Ando district of Mikuni Town, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, the “Mokko Sashi” embroidery—a prayerful stitching technique of female divers—has been revived after 70 years.

You will craft a traditional Japanese amulet called a “back amulet” using the Mon Sashi stitching method, one of the techniques of Anto Mokko Sashi embroidery. A “back amulet” is an embroidered talisman stitched onto children’s clothing to pray for their healthy growth and ward off evil entering through their backs.

The completed back amulet will be finished as an appliqué, which you can sew onto your own shirt or other garment. Please bring one of your own shirts on the day.
