Yunnan Stone Forest Geological Park is a spectacular limestone karst landscape—South China’s representative and hailed as the "First Wonder of the World" since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Formed about 270 million years ago, it was once a vast sea.

Over time, the movements of the lithosphere gradually caused a retreat of the waters and the rise of the limestone landscape. Due to constant erosion by the elements, the area finally developed into the present-day appearance.

You will spend 2-3 hours to visit the Big Stone Forest Area and the Small Stone Forest Area.

An enjoyable and engaging experience. We did not feel rushed although the journey to these two attractions was a distance, given the traffic conditions. Jiuxiang cave system was well-lit and maintained. Our Guide, Gil was knowledgeable about Yunnan, namely, the Minorities, and fluent in English. He was able to give recommendations on how to complete the Jiuxiang cave system and Shilin Stone Park to our diverse group of 4 of various ages and fitness levels. Appreciate it as our group included 20 to over 70 year old travellers. Lunch featuring the Yi minority diet was interesting. His anecdotes on Yunnan life, food and transport tips brightened our day too.
