Fantastic
Location is perfect. Everything including shops, restaurants, La Jolla cove and the Cave store is walkable. The bed was very comfortable, the breakfast was impressive and the parking is about as easy as it comes!! A fantastic stay.

Great
I was on the second floor. My room was moderately large. The bed was comfortable. There was a good television that I could attach a Roku player to. The view out the window was of an alley with dumpsters. There were wooden shutters on the window. The room was reasonably quiet, but I did hear some noise from the restaurant downstairs occasionally around 8:30 PM when the kitchen was doing prep work. They have a breakfast in the morning in pleasant room that has an outdoor balcony. I ate oatmeal and eggs there most mornings. They have coffee and tea and other hot breakfast items, including pastries and cereals. The breakfast is free. The room was roughly $400 a night. I would stay there again, but she was a higher floor if possible. I think it is one of the better choices to be near the walkable places you would enjoy in La Jolla Village.

Pros: The hotel is in a great location. You can walk to anywhere in the Village. The room was clean and bed was comfortable. Cons: There is a mildew type smell throughout the hotel. We were on the 4th floor and as soon as the elevator opened, the smell was prominent. The smell continued into the room. The room was clean and furnishings were not outdated, but the bathroom showed a lot of wear and tear and there was no water pressure in the shower. They charge a daily $15 resort fee for their included breakfast buffet, which looked disappointing, but I never tried it. All in all, I don't know how to feel about the hotel. It was not overly expensive and I wasn't expecting a 4 or 5 star hotel, but for the price, I was hoping it would meet a Courtyard Marriott level of quality. However, it missed that mark as well.

Warning: The price you see on Expedia is not the price that you pay. They add an additional fee that was not listed on the Expedia page (the manager himself could not find it). This only became apparent after I paid via credit card. The staff then argued with me for a facilities fee or something of the like, which is essentially a bait and switch, and highly dishonest. This may be corrected now, but I am sure the additional fees will be buried in the fine print. There is nothing like arriving after a long trip to find out your hosts are trying to rip you off, and then blame it on you. Great hospitality guys.

Fantastic
The Empress Hotel is convenient and easy to get in out of .I like the low-key vibe throughout, but I also appreciate the unexpected and nice details that confirm that I made the right choice in La Jolla. La Valencia is lovely but significantly more expensive. Also checking in and out and parking are a bigger deal.
