Kansai Niche Secret One-Day Tour: Awaji Island / Mount Koya / Kumano Kodo (Choose one of three) - Departing from Osaka Shinsaibashi

This Kumano Kodo day trip was a perfect experience, and I must highly recommend our guide, Yan! The guide is Chinese, so there was absolutely no language barrier throughout the entire trip. They served as both driver and guide, meticulously arranging everything, making the trip incredibly hassle-free. Before arriving at each attraction, the guide would provide detailed explanations of its history and key highlights. They thoughtfully advised us on how to best experience each site, what specific sights to focus on, and clearly communicated the duration of free time and the meeting time for our return. This meant we didn't have to worry about planning ourselves, and the pace of the trip was just right. The entire itinerary, from the service area, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Otorii, and collecting stamps at Oyu no Hara, to Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji Temple, Hiro Shrine, Daimonzaka, and Hayatama Taisha, concluding with a visit to the Totsukawa Onsen footbath, featured detailed and easy-to-understand explanations at every stop. The guide eloquently shared the cultural stories behind the Kumano Sanzan, allowing us to grasp the profound heritage behind these World Heritage sites, even without prior research. The guide's service attitude was gentle and attentive, and their driving was smooth and safe. They never took detours or rushed the itinerary. There was no pressure throughout the trip, allowing ample time for photos, leisurely strolls, and worship. At the end, there was even plenty of time to soak our feet in the footbath to relieve travel fatigue. I was initially concerned about the inconveniences of traveling alone in a foreign country, but thankfully, this Chinese-speaking guide provided meticulous care throughout the journey. The itinerary was both enriching and relaxed, allowing for a deep appreciation of the sacred Kumano landscape. The overall value for money was excellent. For anyone planning a day trip to Kumano, I strongly recommend Guide Yan!

It rained that day, but it didn't affect the itinerary or the experience. There were 10 people in the group: 8 foreigners and 2 from Hong Kong/Macau. We traveled in a 14-seater mini-bus with excellent air conditioning. Our guide and driver, Yan Lei, was very responsible and attentive. He could introduce the attractions using simple English and detailed Mandarin, and there were also recorded explanations played on the bus. He led us to multiple attractions on foot along the way. He not only prepared umbrellas but also snacks and tea. Entry to the main pagoda and the Kondo (Golden Hall) each cost JPY 500 for worship. Kongobuji Temple (JPY 1000) features a rock garden and paintings on the interior walls. Personally, I recommend spending more time at the Reihokan Museum (JPY 1300), which exhibits cultural artifacts and Buddhist statues; the table mandala souvenir there is quite unique. There are several restaurants nearby offering shojin ryori (vegetarian Buddhist cuisine), but be mindful of your time. In the afternoon, we attended a free Goma prayer ceremony led by monks. You can write wishes on wooden sticks for good fortune (JPY 1000) and then cast them into the sacred fire. The path through Okunoin to Kobo Daishi's mausoleum is lined with ancient trees and cemeteries. The drive involves many winding mountain roads, so those prone to motion sickness should be aware.

Our trip to Mount Koya was absolutely perfect. Everything worked smoothly from start to finish. Our guide, who was Chinese, spoke both English and Chinese fluently and was an absolute sweetheart—very kind, attentive, and incredibly patient, especially with us since our English is not very strong. Our driver was also excellent and very professional. The tour itself is incredible. The itinerary is well planned and very enriching—you truly get to experience the deep cultural and religious roots of Japan. It’s a unique and meaningful experience. Everything was amazing, and our guide made it even more special. I would definitely do it again many times if I could!

This day trip to Kumano Kodo was absolutely amazing. Despite being a long day (7:00–20:00), it never felt tiring thanks to the excellent organization and pacing. We visited the three sacred Kumano Kodo Sanzan shrines, the largest torii gate in Japan, and the highlight of the day: the breathtaking Nachi Waterfall, which was truly spectacular. Special thanks to Hanazawa, our guide, for the incredible attention from the very first minute. With many hours on the bus, he made sure we were comfortable at all times, providing neck pillows, drinks, and even snacks after a long and fascinating walk. The stops were perfectly timed to enjoy each place, have lunch, and buy souvenirs. Learning about this UNESCO World Heritage site and ending the day with a relaxing foot bath at an onsen was the perfect finish. 10/10 — highly recommended for a peaceful and meaningful day in one of Japan’s most sacred places.

Kudos to Mr. Hanasawa. He was the epitome of a perfect tourist guide. His attention to his craft was impeccable. Our visit to Awaji Island was one for the book- unforgettable and truly magical. The idea of having the best pancakes we’ve had by far watching the sunset was spectacularly an experience that made a lasting impression. We are going back to see more of Awaji. 100% recommended this tour and Mr. Hanasawa. Doumo arigatou gozaimasu Mr. Hanasawa!

This has to be the best photo-op tour I've ever experienced. The tour group was small, so we spent very little time gathering at each attraction. Our guide, Mr. Hanazawa, was also very attentive to the needs of every group member. The attractions on the itinerary, such as Awaji Yumebutai and the Flower Park, offered plenty of great spots for photos, and the sunset over Awaji Island was absolutely stunning. Plus, the crowds were noticeably smaller than at popular tourist spots, making it easy to get a whole picture to yourself. Mr. Hanazawa is not only fluent in Chinese but also very enthusiastic about helping with photos. If you're looking for a unique photo-op experience, I definitely recommend this tour!

Shunnavi was a patient and friendly guide, with plenty of experience. He was punctual and had great knowledge of Koyasan. He also recommended lunch for us which was a great recommendation. He even bought snacks for us.hope can join his tour next trip.

An exceptionally good, niche route! A taste of the Kumano Kodo, one of the world's two great pilgrimage trails, and a visit to Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, said to be the most spiritually powerful in Japan. The route isn't difficult; the 7km is easily manageable, a tranquil forest bathing experience. I only encountered a few local Japanese people and European/American backpackers along the way. The itinerary was perfectly arranged. Afterward, we went to the crystal-clear Kawayu Onsen next door to wade upstream and soak in the open-air baths. There were no tourists, just many Japanese families playing with their children. Only a local Kansai tour guide could develop such a fantastic product! I'm already looking forward to the next niche tour while still on the way back.

This itinerary is perfect for tourists who want to experience a taste of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail. 1. Highly efficient, saving time, effort, and money. If you were to travel by train and transfer to a bus on your own, it would take more than 6 hours each way, making a day trip impossible. 2. The section from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is the highlight of the Kumano Kodo. The route includes villages, stone-paved paths, primeval forests, and open mountain ranges, with ever-changing scenery along the way. Walking along the quiet ancient path and breathing in the fresh air is a refreshing and enjoyable experience. The Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine at the end is known as Japan's most sacred shrine, where you can make wishes and pray for good fortune. 3. The foot bath at Kawayu Onsen at the end of the trip is the perfect finishing touch. Kawayu, as the name suggests, is an entire stream that is a hot spring. You can dig anywhere on the shore and find hot spring water. Soaking your feet in a foot bath after a hike is a great way to relieve fatigue. Finally, you can enjoy a good nap on the bus, bringing the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail trip to a perfect end.
