Departing from the Auckland Viaduct, enjoy a scenic 75-minute cruise across Tikapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf, to reach this tranquil island sanctuary. Once there, you can explore established walking tracks through native bush, along coastal paths, and discover the island’s fascinating history, including relics, sculpture installations, and panoramic views of the Gulf. Rotoroa has been predator-free since 2014, making it a haven for native wildlife, including rare bird species. The award-winning museum and historic buildings provide insights into the island’s past as a rehabilitation center.

The scenery is beautiful, and the flora and fauna are well-preserved. You can often see birds native to the island walking nearby, making for a great overall experience.

Basically a round trip access to a pest free sanctuary. Happy to contribute to environmental protection via our tickets. There is however no paid guided tour available (22NZD per head as stated on website) on the day of travel. Explorers would like the island but some paths are too steep to venture into for beginners like me.
You are free to wander around the island, so if you choose a different route than the other tourists, you'll feel like you're walking alone on a deserted island. I was able to walk around while listening to the sounds of birds and various insects. Food and drinks are not sold on the island, so you must purchase them in advance. I bought a sandwich and a chocolate brownie on the ferry during the trip.
We enjoyed the beautiful scenery. However, please note that you need to prepare your own lunch, and there are no facilities selling food on site.
