What to expect
Nestled in Kien Hung, Ha Dong, Hanoi, the small but prestigious village of Da Sy has a long-standing history of forging professions. Historically, two blacksmith ancestors of the profession—Nguyen Thuat and Nguyen Thuan—came to the village several hundred years ago and taught forging techniques to the locals. During the Vietnam War, the village was the main source of support for the Vietnamese military. However, when peace returned to Vietnam, the locals returned to making agricultural implements such as ploughs, rakes, etc.
The work of making forging products is hard and complicated with various processes, such as making rough drafts, keeping fires burning, hitting red-hot iron into shape with hammers, tempering (strengthening) the metal with water, and then sharpening the final product.

A wonderful experience. We went back with our own customised knives that suit our cooking needs. it took us about 3 hours for the whole process. The blacksmiths are very knowledgeable. Nic the guide is friendly and knows his stuff. He speaks excellent English. Come and experience it. You will not regret it.
Such a memorable experience! The class took place in Ha Dong, a village known for generations of knife makers. The craft has been passed down for years and you could really feel that heritage throughout the workshop. We got to shape our own knives from start to finish. Mine ended up with a few imperfections from my mistakes, but that gave my knife a lot more character. It became a souvenir with a story. Plus our guide, Nick, was sooo helpful and fun to be around too. He made the whole day feel easy and enjoyable. If you’re into knives or love hands-on experiences, this is a must. Definitely worth every penny. ❤️
such a unique and fun experience. Nhi, our translator and guide was incredibly helpful and our instructor was extremely talented and knowledgeable (she fixed all of our mistakes with ease). I would absolutely recommend if you can find the time.
Rick did a great job in guiding us through the process of making our known knifes! He also helped us with some insider Tips for the city and good places to go. I absolutely recommend it and the knifes turned out really great even with two left hands :) Sicherheit:

We had a fab time! Thank you to Nik and family for making us so welcome. Spending the time to walk us through the whole process and nuances was a really great experience. It was really special to learn that we were working with the only female blacksmith acknowledges by the government. Nik and his family took great care of us, and we are both thrilled with the experience and our knives.
Nick our tour guide is amazing. He speak so good english and explain every steps of the way. Our knifes making master (I call her my mama) she is so professional and being so patient with us. All of us really enjoy the workshop and the amazing final products to bring home.
Authentic experience with a very skilled master of craft. Three of us each made a knife which we are very proud of. Level of assistance and teaching was appropriate and enjoyable. If you are in two minds about this experience, just have a go! Be mindful that knives cannot be posted out of Vietnam and must be transported in checked luggage. Transfers were flexible, smooth and easy. Thanks for a great experience!!
