Tokyo Station - Shin-Yokohama ·
you can use the QR quote on the voucher issued by Klook to enter the platform. There is no need to exchange for train ticket at the station. However, there was a bit of confusion of where to board the train and we had asked many staff before we were able to find the gate. it will be better if we board at ueno station instead of Tokyo station. And there is no need to change the timing in Klook if you are unable to catch your booked train. the ticket can be used for the date u have booked in any train to the same destination. if you change it in Klook, you need to incur addition admin fees which is not necessary. Also, I think taking the free seating ticket is better cos they don’t put you together even when you have booked the reserved seats. we were seated separately!

It was an awesome experience .Booking with Klook was so much ease . Pre booking is available and confirmed seats. The train was pretty and the staff are friendly too . Do take note that Car 1 is non airconditioned due to it is a sightseeing train and they would like to preserve the traditional style . They have cafe in one of the car and passenger able to enjoy the scenery .

Tokyo Station - Shin-Osaka Station ·
It's a good choice to book the tickets with Klook as the seats would be booked in advance. We go the windows seat as requested and the view of Mt Fuji is breathtaking. On a side note, the QR code for the Shinkansen alone would not get past the gate as it has to be used together with the Suica. We wished we knew it before we were at gate as it is not easy with the crowd.

Shin-Yokohama - Tokyo Station ·
easy to get in and out of the station with the direct use of the QR code issued by klook . We even took an earlier train back to Tokyo and sat on the unreserved seat. The station at Yokohama is very simple and direct as compared to that in Tokyo.

Nagano - Tokyo Station ·
coming back from Nagano to Tokyo is so much simpler as the station itself isn’t as horrid as from Tokyo to Nagano. The train will be at the platform before the schedule time and so pls be at the platform at least 30 mins earlier. however, you can still take another train if you have missed the booked one but you need to take the unreserved seat. Actually there is no need to spend more on reserved seat. And there is a noodle stall in the platform so you can eat there if you have missed your meal.

Itsuku was so polite and knowledgeable! Thank you so much for the great experience. He was so patient; we spent way too much time feeding the cute deers! We really appreciated him taking us to the train station and guiding us to the non-stop back to Osaka when the tour was over. We also had fun with other people in our group, Paul and his wife were a joy to hang out with. My family wish you and Itsuku many blessings in the future! Book the trip, it's worth the steps.

Japan train ticket prices

Premium Japan trains

If you're traveling between cities or seeking a fast, comfortable, and luxurious way to reach your destination, consider booking a Shinkansen, Japan's iconic bullet train. These high-speed trains provide a premium travel experience, with ticket prices ranging from around 800 to 8,000 yen depending on the distance. Combining speed, style, and comfort, the Shinkansen is perfect for passengers who appreciate an upscale journey with a touch of elegance.

One-way trip in Standard Class

Nozomi Shinkansen: 14,000 to 22,000 yen

Hikari Shinkansen: 13,000 to 19,000 yen

Kodama Shinkansen: 12,000 to 17,000 yen

Affordable Japan trains

In Japan, local and suburban trains are typically the most affordable travel option. These trains often run on point-to-point routes or loop lines, making them ideal for short-distance and in-city travel, such as the famous Yamanote Line in Tokyo or the Osaka Loop Line. A short ride within a city can cost around 150-300 yen, while longer trips between cities or regions may range from a few hundred to a couple thousand yen. Additionally, local trains are included in the JR Pass, so be sure to book your rail pass on Klook for the best discounts!

Prices of airport express trains

If you're looking for a speedy journey to top cities in Japan from the International Airport, you can take the express train services to get you there efficiently. From Narita International Airport, the Narita Express can take you to Tokyo in just 36 minutes for around 2,400 yen. If you're arriving at Kansai International Airport, you can opt for the Haruka Kansai Airport Express, priced at around 1,300 yen, reaching Tennoji in about 35 minutes, Osaka in 50 minutes, and Kyoto in 80 minutes.

Prices of Japan rail passes (JR Passes)

You can also purchase a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) to travel on the Shinkansen. A 7-day Whole Japan Rail Pass in ordinary coach class costs 50,000 yen, and a 7-day JR Pass in green first-class costs 70,000 yen. If you are travelling to only one to two prefectures, consider getting a regional JR Pass. For example, a JR Kyushu Rail Pass costs from 10,000 to 25,000 yen, and a JR East Tohoku Area Pass costs from 27,000 to 34,800 yen. Check out all the JR Pass offers here and compare the prices at one glance!

Types of trains in Japan

Bullet trains in Japan

Famous globally, the Shinkansen, or "bullet trains," set the standard for high-speed travel, offering a perfect blend of luxury and dependability. With exceptional punctuality, impressive speed, and comfort that makes long journeys a pleasure, it's a travel experience like no other.

Local trains in Japan

Local trains in Japan are the most affordable way to get around cities and nearby areas. They stop at every station, making them perfect for short trips and exploring local neighborhoods.

Rapid trains in Japan

A great middle option between local and express trains, these rapid trains skip some smaller stations, so you get to your destination faster than on a local train. Best of all, they usually cost the same as local trains—no extra fees!

Express trains in Japan

On the other hand, express and airport express trains provide convenient access to stations not served by bullet trains. They offer a budget-friendly yet speedy alternative for traveling across Japan.

Limited express trains in Japan

Limited Express trains in Japan are a fast and comfortable way to travel between cities and tourist spots. They only stop at major stations, helping you get to your destination quicker than regular trains. Some railway companies, like JR, charge a small limited express fee (usually 500 to 4,000 yen) on top of the regular fare.

Scenic trains in Japan

The Sanyo Shinkansen connects Osaka to Fukuoka on Kyushu Island and, established in 1975, is Japan's second-oldest Shinkansen line. It offers five services: Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho, and Sakura. Nozomi is the fastest, reaching speeds of 300 km/h (185 mph). While it is covered by the JR Pass, an additional ticket is required for travel on this service.

Hikari Shinkansen Train

Hikari is the fastest train on the Sanyo and Tokaido Shinkansen lines, included in the JR Pass. The Hikari runs at 300 km/h (185 mph) and takes just over an hour to travel from Shin-Osaka to Okayama.

Kodama Shinkansen Train

This train service, the slowest on the Sanyo line, makes stops at all stations until reaching its end. Kodama trains require almost five hours to reach Hakata station from Osaka. The Kodama train operates at a speed of 285 km/h (185 mph).

Sakura Shinkansen Train

This speedy train service, operating on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, runs at 300 km/h (185 mph) like other trains on the line, though Sakura trains make fewer stops.

Speed of Japan rail

Average speed of Japan Trains

The average speed of a Japanese train not including the Shinkansen (bullet train) is around 80-100 km/h (50-62 mph), depending on the line and type of train, as local and commuter trains typically operate at significantly slower speeds than the high-speed Shinkansen network. The average speed of a non-Shinkansen train can vary depending on the specific train line, distance between stations, and time of day.
