About the event
A baker and his wife, desperate for a child, venture into an enchanted forest where the paths of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame), and Rapunzel all collide. Act one delivers the fairy-tale happy endings audiences expect; act two unravels them, exploring the consequences of wishes granted, the costs of parenthood, and what community owes its members when a vengeful giant comes stalking.
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical blends dark comedy, intricate wordplay, and lush melody into something both playful and unexpectedly moving. This acclaimed production, directed by Jordan Fein with striking design by Tom Scutt, transfers to the Noel Coward Theatre from September 2026 starring John Dagleish, Laura Pitt-Pulford, Simbi Akande, and Kate Fleetwood.
Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, premiered at San Diego's Old Globe in 1986 before opening on Broadway in November 1987, where it won three Tony Awards including Best Original Score and Best Book.
Jordan Fein's inventive revival first captivated audiences at the Bridge Theatre, winning two 2026 Olivier Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Lighting Design, before transferring to the West End.
The Stage praised the staging as 'visually spellbinding,' while other critics called it a 'sublime production of a sublime musical,' cementing this interpretation as a defining modern take on Sondheim's beloved fairy-tale masterpiece.
